What are acne scars?
About 80% of people between ages 11 and 30 will suffer from acne. acne scars form as a result of damage to the surrounding tissues.
What causes acne scars?
Acne scars form as a result of an inflammatory process where the walls of the affected pore swells and breaks down. Sometimes the scars are shallow and heal quickly. However, other times the contents of the blemishes spill into the surrounding tissues and cause deeper scars. In order to repair the scar, the skin responds by forming new collagen fibres and this is when scars are created.

What are the different types of acne scars?
Depressed Scars
Also known as atrophic scars, depressed scars form when not enough collagen is reproduced to replace the destroyed tissue during wound healing. They sit below the skin and there are a few different types:
Boxcar
These are wide and U-shaped scars with sharp edges. They can be shallow or deep. If they are more shallow, they will respond better to skin resurfacing treatments.
Ice pick
Ice pick scars are narrow and V-shaped scars that can go very deep into the skin. They look like small punctures in the skin and are the most difficult to treat due to their depth.
Rolling
These are wide depressions with round edges and an irregular, rolling appearance.
Raised Scars
These occur most commonly with acne on the chest and back. They are raised above the surface of the skin and happen due to the overproduction of collagen when the skin is healing.

TCA Cross
