Skin laxity can gradually develop as collagen levels and skin elasticity decline with age, contributing to changes such as a softer jawline, loose skin around the lower face or reduced firmness across the cheeks and neck.

XERF is a non-invasive radiofrequency (RF) treatment designed to tighten and firm the skin without needles or surgery. It uses two monopolar RF frequencies and three depth settings to deliver controlled thermal energy at different tissue depths, stimulating collagen while addressing different skin concerns.

Unlike treatments that require injections or skin penetration, XERF delivers RF energy through the skin surface. Integrated cooling and temperature monitoring are used during treatment to help maintain comfort while protecting the upper layers of the skin.

How does XERF skin tightening work?

XERF is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment that uses dual-frequency monopolar radiofrequency (RF) energy to deliver controlled heat beneath the skin. It combines 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz frequencies with shallow, middle and deep treatment settings, allowing energy to be delivered at different tissue depths.

  • 6.78 MHz RF — Delivers thermal energy to the more superficial tissue layers, supporting collagen stimulation and skin tightening closer to the skin surface.

  • 2 MHz RF — Penetrates more deeply into the tissue, allowing thermal energy to reach deeper layers involved in skin laxity and facial contouring.

The controlled heating stimulates collagen remodelling within the treated tissues. Over time, this process can improve skin firmness and elasticity, creating a tighter and more lifted appearance without needles or incisions.

What makes XERF different?

XERF combines several technologies to deliver RF energy at different depths while maintaining consistent contact and temperature control throughout treatment.

  • Three treatment depths —  Shallow, middle and deep settings allow the practitioner to adjust how energy is delivered according to the treatment area and tissue depth.

  • Wave Fit technology — XERF varies the duration of RF pulses to control how heat builds within the tissue, supporting more gradual and even energy delivery.

  • Integrated cooling — The ICD cooling system helps protect the skin surface and improve comfort during treatment.

  • Real-time temperature monitoring — Built-in sensors monitor skin temperature throughout treatment, allowing energy delivery to be adjusted accordingly.

What are the benefits of XERF?

XERF is designed to improve skin firmness and facial contours by delivering controlled RF energy at different tissue depths. Depending on the treatment area and individual concerns, potential benefits include:

  • Firmer, tighter-looking skin through collagen stimulation
  • Improved skin elasticity as collagen remodelling develops over time
  • A more defined facial contour, particularly around the lower face and jawline
  • Improvement in the appearance of skin laxity across areas such as the face and neck
  • Non-invasive treatment without needles or incisions
  • Minimal downtime, allowing most patients to return to their usual activities soon after treatment

What areas can XERF treat?

XERF can be used across different areas of the face and neck, with the treatment depth selected based on anatomy and concerns of each area.

What can I expect during a XERF treatment?

Before your XERF treatment, our doctors will assess your skin, discuss the areas you would like to address and determine the appropriate treatment depth and energy settings based on your skin condition and treatment goals.

During treatment, the XERF handpiece is applied to the skin to deliver controlled RF energy to the targeted tissue layers. You will typically feel a gradual warming sensation as the tissue is heated. XERF's integrated cooling system helps keep the skin surface cool and comfortable while energy is delivered beneath the skin.

A session typically takes around 45 minutes, although this can vary depending on the number and size of areas being treated. Numbing cream is generally not required for XERF, and most patients can return to their usual daily activities immediately after treatment.

When will I see results from XERF?

Some patients can notice an initial feeling of tightness or firmness immediately after treatment. As XERF is designed to stimulate collagen remodelling, the results develop progressively and continue to improve over time rather than appearing all at once.

As collagen remodelling continues, improvements in skin firmness, elasticity and facial contours can become more noticeable over the next 3 to 6 months.

How does XERF technique influence my results?

XERF treatment involves more than simply passing the handpiece over the skin. Where energy is delivered, the depth selected and the pattern used across each area can influence the overall tightening and contouring effect.

For facial treatments, our doctors consider the underlying anatomy, tissue distribution and the direction of the intended lift. These factors help guide how the handpiece is moved across the face, rather than applying the same approach uniformly.

This is particularly important where facial volume contributes to the natural contours of the face. Excessive heating of deeper tissues could potentially contribute to unwanted volume loss, particularly in areas where fullness should be preserved. Careful selection of the treatment depth and energy is therefore an important part of treatment planning.

How many XERF treatment sessions will I need?

For many patients, a single XERF treatment is usually sufficient to begin seeing improvements in skin firmness and tightness. However, some patients can benefit from additional sessions depending on the degree of skin laxity, treatment area and their desired results.

XERF vs HIFU: What is the difference?

Both XERF and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) are non-invasive treatments used to address skin laxity, but they use different forms of energy and heat tissue differently.

Factor XERF HIFU
Technology Monopolar radiofrequency (RF) High-intensity focused ultrasound
Energy delivery Creates controlled heating across broader areas of tissue Concentrates ultrasound energy at specific focal depths
Treatment depths

Shallow: Dermis

Middle: Dermis to superficial subcutaneous tissue

Deep: Deeper subcutaneous/structural layers

Common treatment depths include 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm, depending on the device and cartridge used
Sensation Typically experienced as gradual warmth Can feel like brief pulses of heat, tingling or aching
Primary goal Skin tightening, firmness and improved contours Skin tightening and lifting

There is no single treatment that is better for everyone. Whether XERF, HIFU or another treatment is more suitable will depend on your skin condition, degree of laxity, facial anatomy and treatment goals. A consultation with our doctors allows these factors to be properly assessed so that a treatment plan can be tailored to your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

XERF uses two monopolar radiofrequency (RF) frequencies, 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz, to deliver controlled heat at different tissue depths. The 6.78 MHz frequency provides more superficial heating, while the 2 MHz frequency penetrates more deeply, allowing treatment to address different layers of tissue.
